IPCC Climate Report 2021: Our reaction

Responding to today’s IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis, the Centre’s Daniel Clarke calls on world leaders to urgently tackle climate risk.

“The IPCC’s Climate Change report is unequivocal and damning in its findings – climate change is happening and we cannot sit back and ignore it. We simply do not have another 30 years to sound the alarm. Global leaders must take decisive action now to understand the risks, identify those most vulnerable and put in place the finance required to reduce climate impacts.

“While today’s report is a sobering warning, we are also reminded that the world has never been in a better position to act. The local to global technology and expertise exists to predict and prepare for climate shocks. This year’s COP provides a crucial opportunity to stop disasters devastating lives. These discussions should serve as a platform to address the outdated disaster financing system and put in place plans to ensure funding gets to the frontline faster and with greater impact. World leaders must commit to acting as one to tackle climate risk.”

The Centre convened the Crisis Lookout coalition to improve the way we predict crises, prepare response and protect people. The coalition is calling on the G7 and COP to take a radical shift in how the world responds to risk and reacts to disasters. Get in touch to join the campaign.
